How it works

Setting up MailPorter takes about two minutes. After that, it runs automatically in the background.

Here's the basic flow: MailPorter fetches emails from your mail server and imports them directly into Gmail through the official API. Your emails don't pass through any intermediary relay servers.

1

Sign in with Google

Click the "Continue with Google" button and choose the Google account where you want your emails imported. During this process, Google will show you exactly what permissions MailPorter is requesting. We ask for the ability to insert emails and manage labels - that's it. We can't read your existing emails or do anything else with your account.

2

Add your mail server

Enter your POP3 or IMAP server details: the server address, port number, your email address, and password. If you're using a common provider like Yahoo or Outlook, MailPorter can usually auto-detect the server settings for you. Your password is encrypted before we store it.

3

That's it - let it run

Once you save your sync job, MailPorter tests the connection and starts importing your emails right away. You can watch the progress in real time from your dashboard. Going forward, MailPorter will automatically check your mail server on a schedule and import any new emails it finds. You don't need to do anything else.

What happens after you set it up

Once your sync job is running, MailPorter takes care of everything automatically. Here's what's going on behind the scenes:

Scheduled checking

MailPorter connects to your mail server on a regular schedule (the exact frequency depends on your plan settings). Each time it connects, it looks for any new emails that haven't been imported yet.

No storage on our end

When MailPorter imports an email, it reads the message from your mail server and immediately sends it to Gmail through the API. We don't store copies of your emails - they go straight from your server to your Gmail inbox.
